The structural safety of old buildings and post-disaster buildings is a widespreadconcerned problem. Using the energy dissipation technology for building seismicstrengthening is an effective way to ensure its safety. By setting a energy dissipationdevices at the structural deformation to achieve the seismic reinforcement purposes.Compared with conventional seismic reinforcement technology, viscoelastic damper hasbroad application prospects in the field of seismic reinforcement. Because viscoelasticdamper have many advantages, such as simple structure, short construction period, clearreinforcement mechanism, and excellent reinforcement effect and so on.Firstly, based on the analysis of the dynamic mechanical properties of viscoelasticdampers and restoring force model, traditional seismic strengthening methods andenergy dissipation seismic strengthening methods have been summarized andgeneralized. The computational model of viscoelastic damping device has beenestablished. And the effects of support stiffness on viscoelastic damping device stiffnesshave been discussed.Secondly, an expression for calculating the number of dampers and damper arrangedin different distribution patterns damping has been derived. The elastic-plastic timehistory analysis on a reinforced concrete frame structure was carried out by using finiteelement software SAP2000. The seismic behavior of the energy dissipation structureand the structure without control was comparative studied. The effect of energyconsumption of different damper arrangement was also comparative studied. The resultshows that energy dissipation structure can effectively reduce the seismic response ofstructures. The seismic absorption effect of damper according to the story drift is better than that of uniform damper layout and arrangement according to the story shear force.Finally, a seven-story frame structure and a32-story shear wall structure have beendesigned for energy dissipation reinforcement by using viscoelastic dampers. Nonlineartime-history analysis has been studied using SAP2000software. The results showed thatthe structure which has been strengthened meet the requirements of existing standard.
