The paper is devoted to the research of the climatic design strategies for thetraditional royal garden--the Summer Palace. Trough researching the garden space andmini climatic characteristics based on domestic and foreign research methods, theclimatic design characteristics of cold areas, such as the Summer Palace, are analyzed.Through the analysis of the construction history of the Summer Palace, the historicallink between mini climatic design and garden space of the Summer Palace is explored.Based on the analysis of the garden space of the Summer Palace and the whole climateof Beijing, the historical experience of the mini climatic design was summarized.Through the summary for the climatic design experience of the Summer Palace, a moresystematic and widely applicable method for cold areas is explored.Based on the previous research of the Summer Palace and garden space, from theperspective of climatic design, the characteristics of the garden space of the SummerPalace are interpreted. Firstly, form the angle of construction history, site selection,landscape pattern, garden element and historical activities in the garden, the mainfeatures of the Summer Palace are introduced and the link between mini climatic designand garden space is explored. Secondly, from the concept of climatic design, thehistorical and whole climate of Beijing was stated. With the help of the comfort index,the ideal mini climatic is explored, with implied requirements of garden climatic designcontrasted. Thirdly, the key part of this paper will analyze the perceivable mini climatein the Summer Palace and testify the ideas of climatic design during the landscape structuring process, from the perspective of space layout, garden design elements andtypical garden in garden. Finally, based on the previous analysis, the experience andmethods for climatic design in different space are summarized.This paper combines the garden space with climatology, with the major frameworkof the garden space of the traditional garden—the Summer Palace, interprets themethods and features of traditional royal gardens and analyzes the space patterns andhistorical experience of the climatic design in the Summer Palace.
