Environmental protection and development of clean energy is a major prioritytasks for the world in the21st century. Hydropower, as the clean and renewableenergy, is low cost, large scale and strong regulatory. Bulb turbine compared toconventional turbine design, has huge superiorities, which are compact, lightweight,highly powerhouse small, small projects investment, etc. Runner parts is an importantpart of the turbine energy conversion, for which the stress and displacement analysisis necessary.Based on the engineering project of bulb turbine design, performance analysisand optimization methods of the runner parts are researched with the tools oftheoretical calculation, finite element technique and optimization design. The mainwork is as follows:(1) Based on the symmetric analysis of the structural features and general layout ofthe bulb turbine, the design procedure is concluded.(2) The main shaft and the runner body are designed by analogy. Based on thetheoretical calculation and finite element analysis of the nominal and runawayconditions, the determination methods of the key parameters of the main shaftand runner body are proposed.(3) Based on the design of experiment(DOE) and optimization algorithms, themulti-objective optimization methods of the main shaft and runner part arestudied systematically. As a result, the optimization processes are proposed.
