Research On Urban Traffic Soundscape

Traffic noise is one of main urban noise sources. The concept of trafficsoundscape shows up after discussing the categories and contents of originsoundscape research and analysing the characteristics of traffic. And what trafficsoundscape want to study on is detailed proposed through the view of people, soundand environment. In order to stick out the specialties of traffic soundscape, acomparison about study objects and conditioning techniques between trafficsoundscape and building soundscape is coming up. Traffic soundscape occupy animportant position in our daily life, which needs lots of work to build a properevaluation system of it.To know the sound environment of a specific area and to understand the law ofsound is the first step to research the traffic soundscape of it. This paper set TianjinUniversity(Qilitai Campus) as an example to do the research of sound environment. Itfigured out the acoustic structure of the campus and sound laws, understood some ofthe pitfalls of the campus planning and road design and put forward some suggestionsfor improvement as well.Traffic soundscape faces two major research subjects which take part in theprocess of traffic--pedestrians and drivers. What the pedestrians feel about the sound,their preference and subjective evaluation of the road are the important indices forevaluation of a certain section of the road design. In this paper, soundwalk experimenthas been used to study the subjective evaluation of main roads in TianjinUniversity(Qilitai Campus), and explore some important factors which influencewalking.Factors like outside scenery, the car interior noise and road condition will affectthe driver’s mental when driving. In order to explore the influence of visual andauditory external factors on the driver’s mood in the driving process based on researchof traffic soundscape, certain experiments were brought out, and the results of theexternal factors affecting the driver’s mood were carried out by all these dataeventually. After the investigation, we found that the sound field distribution insidethe car could be effected directly and significantly by the on-off state of the carwindow when driving; in case of keeping the window closed, the acoustic characteristics of the car was relatively stable; and the visual impact factor of driver’smood mainly concentrated in the traffic congestion degree and the construction ofroad function, whereas the road beauty, which people usually concerns aboutimpacted it little. The factor whether the interviewee with driving experience or nothad an influence on interviewees’ evaluation of concerns and antipathy factors whendriving, it has got certain meanings in statistics.Finally, according to the content of this article, the last part of this paper tried toput forward building the evaluation system of traffic soundscape, which includes thedivision of the sound environment standard and the choice of improvement measuresbased on realistic factors.
