Multistage centrifugal pumps are widely used in the field of process industry, mining and so on. The study on improving multistage centrifugal pump’s efficiency is important in current energy conservation requirement of China. The products designed by traditional hydraulic flow of two dimension theory often can’t reach the expected standards. With the wide application of high-speed computers, however, the computational fluid dynamics methods have provided new impetus to explore the mechanism of centrifugal pump’s internal flow and performance optimization. In this paper, MD450-60 multistage centrifugal pump which is wildly used in mining equipment is studied as the research subject, and professional CFD software Fluent is used to simulate the flow field of the pump. The paper analyzes the pressure and velocity distribution of the impeller, and DES turbulence model is verified acceptable agreement through comparison different turbulence model simulations and experimental results. In order to investigate the effect of structural parameters on the pump performance, this numerical solution has been carried out for different cases of impeller geometry, for instance, outlet angel, wrap angle, outlet width and blade number. In order to decrease flow loss in guide vanes, return guide vanes were designed through impeller blade design methods and transferable channels were optimized by analyzing main causes of the loss. This paper provides experience and methods for the design, performance prediction and structure optimization of multistage centrifugal pumps.
