China is a car power, with the increasing of the car ownership, the road traffic accidents are also increasing year by year at the same time. According to the law of the People’s Republic of China on road traffic accident statistical yearbook data, among the road traffic accidents, the incidence of mountain highway major workplace accidents account for more than 10% of the whole of the highway. The driving load can be divided into physical and mental load, the automobile internal and external environment, and the driver’s physical condition will affect the driving load, the increase of the driving load can produce unsafe drivers’ behaviour, resulting in the occurrence of traffic accidents. To carry out the road driving load research can help understand the influence of driver workload in the mountain road, privide the theoretical support of the mountain road for better design and reduce the rate of traffic accident in mountain highway.Based on the predecessors’ reseaech results and the summary of related theory, aimed at the characteristics of mountainous highway in China, in this paper, with three mountain two-lane highways as the research object, an experiment is designed for driving load under different driving conditions in the mountain roads. This article mainly analyzes the change of the driving load at the process of straight overtaking, passing each other on staight load and the curve, driving during the corners and some special vehicle collision avoidance cases.By analyzing the test data, the results show that under the five driving conditions of straight overtaking, straight passing, curve passing, driving during the corner and the special vehicle collision avoidance cases, the driving load all will be increased, which the driving load will increase the most under the special conditions such as encountered some pedestrains crossing the road, the second is driving during the straight overtaking and passing for turn driving, increase the least when passing each other on the straight road and curve driving. The driving load will be higher when the driver exceeds the large vehicles than exceeds the small vehicles. The change of the steering wheel angle and speed will lead to the increase of the driver physical load. The faster the steering wheel rotation speed, the driving load is higher During the overtaking process, the driving load is significantly increased in the end. The turns driving will result in an increase of the driving load, cause the rise of the driver ’s tensity. The driving load decreases along with the increase of bend radius. The change of the steering wheel angle, steering wheel speed and the decrease of the vehicle speed all will lead to the increase of the driving load. When driving on the mountainous highway, for the drivers which are unfamiliar with the road environment and have less driving experience, they bear more driving load than other drivers.
