With the development of national economy, the number of motor vehicles keeps increasing, which leads to the urban traffic congestion. As a way of tackling urban traffic congestion bus priority is being widely used around the world, although our country have made some achievements in bus priority, but there is still much room for improvement. We should further implement bus priority, to improve the level of service of buses to attract more people to choose buses as their way of travelling. In order to reduce bus delays at the intersection, an isolated signalized control intersection is selected for the study, two methods are adopted to provide priority for buses:intermittent bus priority approach priority and bus signal priority. Intermittent bus priority approach priority will reduce bus queuing delay, while bus signal priority will reduce delays caused by signal controlling. The contents of the paper are as follows:1. Summarizes the main method of bus priority:bus exclusive lane, bus approach, bus signal priority, introduces the optimizing method of phasing plan and signal timing plan of bus signal priority.2. In order to make full use of the capacity of the approach, the paper points out that intermittent bus approach should be used under certain conditions, and offers the condition, setting method and pre-signal timing method of the intermittent bus approach.3. A mathematical model of adaptive bus signal priority is proposed and non-linear programming is used to solve the model. Without considering right turn traffic, eight phasing plan is used to optimizing the phasing plan, developed a phase switching rule of adaptive bus signal priority.4. VISSIM is used to simulate three kinds of situations:exclusive bus approach and Webster timing plan, intermittent bus approach and Webster timing plan, intermittent bus approach and nonlinear programming timing plan. The result of simulation indicates that intermittent bus approach is better than exclusive bus approach, nonlinear programming timing plan is better than Webster timing plan.
