In order to further develop the advantage of laser, plasma arc and electron beam in direct metal deposition and manufacturing, in the paper laser-plasma hybrid thermal source formed by combining laser and plasma was presented, system for hybrid laser-plasma metal deposition manufacturing was built. the main research contents are as follows:(1) The characteristics on the metal deposition manufacturing of single thermal source such as laser, plasma arc and electron beam were analyzed, base on the concept of direct and rapid manufacturing of metal parts using laser-plasma hybrid thermal source, the coupling mechanism of laser and arc was discussed, the applications in the field of rapid prototyping for laser-arc hybrid thermal source were mainly analyzed, which provided reference for building hybrid laser-plasma rapid deposition manufacturing system;(2) A hybrid laser and plasma system for rapid metal deposition manufacturing based on laser and plasma cladding technologies was built, and the overall layout of the system was planned, the hardware configuration of the system was given in detail, powder feeding mode which was coaxial powder feeding with carrying gas of the system was determined, routing planning for powder feeding of system was specified, the pneumatic system of powder feeding system, gas supply system and waterway of system for plasma system were designed specifically;(3) The problems in the work of existing scraper powder feeders were analyzed, and then the improvement scheme was presented, a scalable oriented and elastic supporting mechanism was designed; plasma torch in the actual work was liable to appear process failure and other issues, for this problem a large current plasma torch for 100~250A of working current was designed, experiments indicate the plasma welding trace appearance is thin, slippery and formal, the plasma torch is suitable for plasma deposition direct metal component manufacturing; base on the existing research results, coaxial nozzle with carrying gas was designed, which can satisfy requirement for laser cladding rapid prototyping; on the basis of discussion about the influence factors of combining laser and arc, multi-angle adjusting mechanism of hybrid laser-plasma deposition head was designed, which is for parameters adjustment in the work process of deposition head;(4)The process flows of system was planned in detail, and the implementation of the software was described. Using a VMC machine as the control center of the system, the integration control schemes for the sub-systems and the machine were designed, two working modes can be implemented on the machine with the process of hybrid laser and plasma metal deposition manufacturing automatically controlled and the main parameters that are related to the deposition quality controlled, which is to achieve the "one machine is multi-purpose" purpose.
