The thesis starts from the view of humanization and makes a further research and discussion to humanization of urban pedestrian space with city environment as background. City is a huge laboratory, and there are both successful cases and failed cases for urban pedestrian space design. According to the current development situation of urban pedestrian space in our country, it is summarized that there are several problems for urban pedestrian space as the following: neglect of people’s feeling, neglect of safety importance, lack of communication space, incomplete public facilities, etc. The thesis analyzes urban beautification activity by referring to materials, and proposes out people-centered urban pedestrian space design and building concept.Jane Jacobs believes that: “Streets are wide space system formed by pedestrian street and square, and are primary base point and scale unit to analyze and judge urban space and environment.” Pedestrian space is an important part in the city, whose development indicates the comprehensive development level of a city, and it is also an important place for people’s living life in the city. With enhanced living quality, the single passage function of pedestrian space can not meet people’s demands any more. Therefore, it becomes extremely important to establish humanized urban pedestrian space in the current society. It is necessary to know people’s psychological demands before building a humanized space, and Maslow points out that: there are different demand levels existed in people’s value system, which are concluded into five aspects: physiological demand, safety demand, demand for sense of belonging, social contact demand and self-actualization demand. The thesis discusses the basic factors to build humanized urban pedestrian space mainly in the three aspects of safety, communication and aesthetic appreciation. And then it concludes the specific measures to build humanized urban pedestrian space. Take public facility as an example, it includes several major aspects: barrier free public facility, service public facility, guiding public service, self-help public facility, etc. In the end, it combines with living cases to analyze the Ginza pedestrian street in Japan, which is also a conclusion to the opinions in the first four chapters.
