The traditional steel brace structure can provide additional stiffness to the body of structure, which helps to reduce the horizontal displacement. But this steel brace is very prone to buckling in the action of earthquake, which leads to lose the energy dissipation capacity. Although we can increase the sectional of the brace to meet the design requirements, but it will occupy a lager building space, affecting building function. Buckling restrained braces can overcome the shortcomings of traditional steel brace. The Buckling restrained braces will not be easily yield when it subject to tension and compression. So it can consume seismic energy well, thereby, protecting against damage to the main structure. In the same of seismic performance, the buckling restrained braces occupy much smaller space than the traditional steel braces which occupy. It helps to conserve building space.In this article, I firstly summary the principles, the composition, the study from home and board of buckling restrained braces. Then according to the characteristics of the buckling restrained braces, I put forward four mechanical model which are relevant to buckling restrained braces. And I analyze the advantages and the disadvantages of the four mechanical model. Then I make a summary about the method which is used to analyzing the frame which is added to the buckling restrained braces under the strong earthquake.I use the finite element software to analyze three kinds of frame structure: the pure steel frame, the steel frame which is added general steel brace, and the steel frame which is added buckling restrained brace. The results show that the frame which is added steel brace or buckling restrained braces has the similar results under the small earthquake. But under the large earthquake, the frame which is added to the buckling restrained braces has lots of advantages.Subsequently, I summary the theory and the design method of the performance based seismic. Then I put forward the criterion of the benefit of investment. It draw forth the calculation method of total cost in the life cycle of structure. And I summary the design method of the buckling restrained brace frame. Finally, I make a complete application of the contents which are introduced above all through an example. The results show that the frame which is added buckling restrained braces is cheaper than the other frames. That suggests that the buckling restrained brace has lots of advantages in reducing the total cost of the structure.
