The 12th five-year plan has being further studied by electric power industry, the hydropower engineering construction entered into golden era once again. To guarantee the safety operation of hydraulic structure is the first premise of the development of hydropower. Flood discharge capacity and flow pattern is key factor that cannot be ignored when talk about the safety operation of the water conservancy engineering structure. Therefore, it has practical significance that to find effective methods of numerical analysis and reasonable means of theory research.In domestic and international computation research direction of flood discharge capacity and water flow pattern, the commercial CFD software, FLUENT, was widely accepted by numerous scholars and researchers and was widely used in the field of hydraulic structure analysis, with rich built-in physical models, excellent open User-Defined Function, precise calculation ability, strong compatibility between various industries. Currently, the area of numerical simulations about the water flow pattern and ability of the overflow dam still remains to be fully understood. The main purpose of this article is numerical simulation of the overflow process of the overflow dam, with main work as follows:(1)Through the calculation of nine basic examples of three classical weir types, the method was verified correct and reliability:Use the VOF multiphase flow model to simulate the process to track the water-vapor interface position; Use PISO algorithm as pressure-velocity coupling way which has faster speed in every step convergence; using the renormalization group of turbulence model to simulate the overflow dam.(2)Selected the overflow building of the Shi-Long and Shuang-Gou hydropower station as the research object, using the aforementioned simulation method, respectively compared and analyzed the results of the two projects’ discharge capacity in the numerical simulation method, in-situ test method and model test method, demonstrated the applicability of the proposed simulation parameters in engineering practices, enriched the numerical analysis method for overflow dam.In conclusion, based on FLUENT software platform this paper expounded the basic theory of CFD software, verified the feasibility of this software on the analysis of flow pattern and ability when the water overflowed the overflow dam, provided a way to the same kind problem which cannot be field experiment in limited conditions.
