With smart grid research and development, the optical fiber communication network in power system become more and more important. Due to the continuously introducing all kinds of communication technology, various kinds of new equipment, new systems and new technology applied in the communication system and a growing number of new problems appear constantly. Because of this the management of electric power communication system urgently need to be more intelligent, more convenient and more systematic. Optical fiber online monitoring system mainly includes optical power real-time monitoring technology, optical time domain reflection technology, automatic control technology, database technology, etc. System using existing fiber-optic landmark information database storage. It will get the fault location of OTDR test shows on the landmark information directly. It can provide maintenance personnel with more intuitive visual fault information accurately, and effectively shorten the time of fault repair.This paper briefly describes the development of the smart grid in the context of high-speed optical fiber line monitoring system construction significance, basic theory and its development. First of all, the method of fault location, the existing optical fiber monitoring systems technical shortcomings, some of the specific functions of line maintenance requires a detailed and comprehensive technical analysis. Secondly,this system exists a landmark information of each optical fiber links and configuration, can the working status of optical fiber in the fiber optic network for automatic real-time monitoring, and according to the OTDR test data, draw the test curve, from the analysis of optical fiber transmission state specific conclusions, as a result, the system can have the function that prevent failure ahead of time, can also for failure fiber fast query and handle failure position, through the optical fiber links in the database of landmark information can visually display the fault location. Finally, a complete set of optical fiber line monitoring systems.This system software adopts microcomputer interface simple, intuitive, facilitate personnel monitoring. It have a more complete functions such as real-time monitoring, testing. It can meet the demand of present daily fiber network maintenance work.
