Column style, as the Chinese traditional architecture components, has a long history. It plays an important loading-bearing role in building structures; and its decorative art reflects the artistic characteristics in different historical periods. The decorative art of column is invested with the feudal etiquette, religious culture and folk custom; it is the combination of architecture, art and culture. Thus decorative art of column is an important part of China traditional culture art.Ming and Qing Dynasty,the last phase of Chinese traditional feudal society,is the period of Eastern and Western cultural collision and national integration.China tradition architecture reaches the last peak in Ming and Ming Dynasty through a long-time development, enrich and perfect. Along with thousands of years’ development of architecture, the architecture decorative art of column records the social and cultural characteristics of different regions and periods. Therefore the architecture decorative art of column in Ming and Qing Dynasty embodies social culture and records humanistic thought in Ming and Qing Dynasty adequately. It has a very high historical and cultural value with the characteristic of diversity of architectural form, especially column form, which is more dynamic and unique.According to investigation on the existing buildings of Ming and Qing Dynasty, this thesis, combined with a large number of academic literature, selects the palace buildings, temple, religious buildings and residential buildings of the column as the research object. Through in-depth analysis of the history and culture of Ming and Qing Dynasty, this thesis, based on decorative features of column in different types of buildings in Ming and Qing Dynasty,interprets the social and cultural connotations involved in decorative art of column in that period.
