Limit state method is the development direction of the design of the railway embankment retaining structures, which is based on reliability theory. It’s studies have been in full swing. Statistical characteristics of random variables is urgently needed in the study of the retaining wall limit state method design. But,there are two main problems:The first one is that there is almost no the parametric statistical characteristics for the limit state method of the design of the railway embankment retaining structures;the other one is that the calculation method used in specification is different from the actual situation. So it is necessary to do experiments to verify the statistical characteristics of the random variable and the calculation method. For this situation, the main research contents of this paper are shown as follows:(1) Design experiments for the important parameters-basal friction coefficient; Analyse and processing the experimental data; and get the value of the basal friction coefficient. At last, getting its statistical characteristics and the distribution.(2) Compare the experimental results for the four basal friction coefficients to the value which is predetermined in the"railway embankment retaining structure design specifications ".Verify the practice that the 1.5 specification values is equal to the limit value.(3) Classsify the soil into four classes, including:grave soil, sand, silt, clay soil. Calculate the anti-slide reliability index of the general area gravity shoulder wall by the mean of Monte-Carlo method. Analyse the difffierents of reliable indicator after classsfying the soil.(4)Analyse the correlation between the soil patamerters, and calculate the reliable indicator. Compare the reliability index to the one than don’t consider the correlation of the parameters, and analyse the distinctives.
