With the quick development of power system and rapid excitation regulator, the problem of low frequency oscillation becomes more and more prominent. In order to solve this problem, power system stabilizer is an efficient method if installed at the end of generator. However, because of the limits of its structural mode, the traditional power system stabilizer can no longer satisfy the control demand of low frequency and severe oscillations. Therefore,one new power system stabilizer with high performances called "PSS4B" come into being,which plays an very important role in the stability of the power system. Based on the project of Ji-niu hydropower station’s PSS test, this thesis mainly focus on the problem of low frequency oscillation, and analyzes the power system stabilizer deeply.Firstly, this paper studies deeply the reason that rapid excitation regulator deteriorates the damping of power system. Secondly, because there is no standard way to do that, this paper analyzes the the effect of reactive current compensation on system damping, and derives an available idea of setting the parameter of reactive current compensation during theoretically study, and it is verified by simulation of PSD-BPA and test. Thirdly, in order to compare the performance of PSS4B and PSS2B, this paper builds their simulation models in MATLAB/Simulink,preset their parameter, and do small disturbance simulation experiment in single-machine infinite bus system and two-machine transmission system, the result shows that PSS4B is better than PSS2B to suppress oscillation range of 0.45-1.5Hz in the local and regional oscillation mode oscillation mode. Lastly, it applies the parameter which get from simulation of PSS2B to the test of the parameter setting of No.1 electric generator hydropower station. It compensates phase reasonably, and it can well restrain low frequency oscillation.It provides a positive damping to the system,so simulating parameters can be applied to actual operation.The study has some theoretical significance with application of PSS4B in our country and PSS parameter setting test.
