In recent years, long-period wave from open seas have had bad effects on coastal ports for the significant change of wave heights. Many accidents, such as anrevetment damages, have happened in some ports at home and abroad, which severely influences on the safety of terminal operations. Therefore, how the long-period wave affects design wave parameters for port engineering becomes a key problem. This paper analyzes the design wave elements in port engineering under action of long-period waves, based on the irregular wave model and numerical simulation method of long-period waves. Due to the tropical storm plum blossom in 2011, significant changes of the wave height and wave period results in a damage to a typical revetment engineering along the shore of Yellow Sea in Dalian. With the use of tropical storm data and wave conditions in the north Yellow Sea in Liaoning province in the process of the typhoon, and the founded model, this paper studies the design wave elements of big waves in the engineering area. Through the comparion for the analysis results and measured data of site around, this paper ascertains the design wave elements for the studied engineering area during storm plum blossom. Not only can the research result be used in the analysis of the damage reasons of typical engineering projects based on their wave conditions, but also in analyzing the impact of long-period wave caused by tropical storm on the hydrological conditions during the port construct ion in Dalian northern Huanghai, and in other areas affected by tropical storms in Liaoning Pr ovince.
