As an important part of the powertrain system, transmission housing is subjected to a complex load and guarantees the normalwork of transmission. Therefore, how to effectively design a transmission housing and catering for design requirements are very important. Taking the transmission housing as the object, this paper focused on the study and evaluation of the topology optimization method for shell-type parts.Finally, providing basis and guidance for the design of housing is the essence.According to topology optimization theory, the topology optimization method including homogenization method and variable density method and its algorithm were studied. And a mathematical model based on SIMP variable density method was established. The topology optimization design scheme was proposed for the further applications of topology optimization.Taking the housing with a pair of gear as example, the housing with a pair of gear was analyzed in finite element method. The objective function and constraints were set according to the analysis results. And thetopology optimization was done with using the optistruct software. Then optimization housing model was established according to the result of optimization. The final element analysis results were verified and compared with the initial model. The mass of the housing was reduced and the lightweight goal was achieved under the little difference of strength and stiffness. Finally, modal analysis of the optimization model was done to provide the further design of housing.For the performance requirements of the transmission housing design process, the evaluation indexes for a transmission housing design were established. Specific requirements such as strength, stiffness and vibration characteristics in transmission housing design process were given. Taking the longitudinal transmission housing as example, the initial modelof transmission housing was established and compared with the final model of the company. The strength, stiffness and vibration characteristics of the final model were verified through benchmarking. And it meets the evaluation criteria of the housing design. The topology optimization method was used in the transmission housing design process. And the final model of the housing was determined. The results show that the design of the housing meets the design requirements and the topology optimization method is feasible. It has a high reference value for the design of the housing-type parts.
