City highway portal is not only a sign of the separation of the space, but also a approach to demonstrate the image of the city. Through it, it is one of the best ways to understand its culture, geographic condition and even characteristics, which indicates that the quality of the landscape of city highway portal affects the overall image of the city.In our study, we introduced the landscape assessment system of city highway portal based on a series of facts and theories i.e. the conclusion from the concepts and practical experience from domestic and international scholars. We also take the result of landscape assessment into consideration when we implement landscape planning of city highway portal with the help of knowledge in urban planning, transportation, landscape, traveling, echo system and also the combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. We take it as a reference explore the design and practice of f city highway portal. This article illustrates the basic practical convincing research of the landscape of city portal of road. Firstly, our research illustrates the concepts of portal, city portal, city portal landscape, landscape assessment and the assessment of the landscape of city highway portal landscape and other relative theories based on three examples in Industry area at Suzhou, Shannan District at Huainan and Zunyi Road at Guiyang. We also implement some analysis based on some features i.e. complexity, dynamics, etc. Secondly, the landscape elements of city highway portal can be grouped into 3 categories, i.e., natural, artificial, functional elements. Natural element consists of geographic situation, plant, water, weather conditions, etc. Artificial element consists of surface of road, architecture, man-made facilities, etc. Functional element is consists of vehicle flows, flows of the movement of people, humans’activities, etc. Thirdly, based on the theories of modern landscape design, the land scape of city highway portal can be perceived in three aspects, function, ecology and esthetics. Then we make detailed designs based on these 3 perspectives. Also we try to build the assessment system of the landscape of city highway portal. Fourthly, through survey, we filter and improve the elements of the assessment system we mentioned above. Furthermore, combined with relative materials, we make more reasonable criteria to make assessment based of different factors. Fifthly, combined with research of experts and the analysis based of AHP layers, we gain the weight of the different factors in our assessment systems. Then we calculate the result with the comprehensive evaluation index method. Finally, taking Yingbing Avenue in Bengbu as an example, we have introduced the detailed steps how we applied our assessment system. And the result based on our system is B. So to make the result better, we raise several solutions to improve it.
