This article reviews the design guidelines of single- and double-tiered geosynthetic reinforced soil walls of FHWA specification at first, and supplements the design method of multi-tiered retaining walls. And Conducts the three groups of laboratory model tests. Based on the theoretical analysis and laboratory model tests, establishes the finite element model of tiered retaining walls under static load by finite element software PLAXIS. The main contents are:(1)internal and external stability checking contents in the multi- tiered retaining walls design methods, mechanics model of interaction between higher and lower wall.(2)discovering the effect of the width of tier on basal stress, deformation of walls and failure mode through three groups laboratory model tests of the retaining wall of different tier width, stress dispersion and clearing the effect range about the tier width.(3)establishing three groups model of different tier width by finite element software PLAXIS and simulating the stress of the basement and retaining wall horizontal and vertical deformation, reinforcement strain and fracture surface form of the tiered retaining wall during filling process and under the action of uniformly distributed static load, and determining the reliability of the model test compared with model results.Synthesizing theoretical basis, the results of laboratory model test and numerical simulation, when the tier width of retaining wall meet the superior wall sites outside the coulomb rupture of the lower wall, the basal stress and wall deformation level, will be a minimum. The upper wall has little effect on the lower wall structure. There is no apparent fracture surface to the whole wall under the load, the fracture surface of the upper and lower wall can be considered separately.
