Murals are now widely used in the architecture of subway stations. However, currentarchitectural murals are usually incompatible with the architectural environment and hencerestrict the level of subway station’s overall aesthetic value.Integrating architectural murals with subway environment is an important factor duringthe design stage of subway murals. Related research, especially practical case studies, is veryscarce in this area both at home and abroad. This work comprehensive studies both the superficial and deep level combination principles and methods of subway murals and itsenvironment from their co-existence perspective. Field research, literature survey, case studiesand other methods are used to conduct this work. This thesis first briefly reviews the history ofmurals and architecturals murals development. Then the architectural murals’ properties, statusand affect, and setup principles are described. The appearance and structure of murals andarchitectures are extensively analyzed. In addition, the principles and methodologies ofcombining murals into architectural environments are also studied, factors include light andcolor, shape, texture, placement, flavor, culture, function, and etc. are considered.
