This research focuses on the transformation process in architectural type in China's rural area. The transformation in architectural type is observed in the context of modernization which supports the daily usage of local people. At the same time, however, it's undermining the overall environment. This research selects Dangxi Street in Xiamei Village, Wuyishan City as case study, analyzes the transformation process in architectural type. This research aims to set forth a different perspective on the development of Dangxi Street in Xiamei Village and provide reference for the development of new vernacular architecture of other villages.First, by using the method of typology, this research analyzes the composition and distribution of architectures in Dangxi Street. It records the transformation process, causes and effects. Moreover, it analyzes the veranda space and preliminarily clarifies the characteristics of the architectural environment.Second, by applying the method of Semantic Differential Method, this research analyzes the human perception of different architectural types. Also, by using Factor Analysis, the composition and the features of Dangxi Street in Xiamei Village are further studied.Last but not least, combined with the research conclusions, architectural designs are proposed based on the transformation process in architectural type. Semantic Differential Method is applied again in the assessment of these three designs in order to support and add additional conclusions. This study clarifies the characteristics of the transformation process in architectural type by researching on the architectural environment of Dangxi Street. It not only applies the research conclusions in new vernacular architectural designs, but also experiments in the design process comprising architectural analysis, architectural programming and architectural assessment. It provides a set of new ideas and examples for the architectural design in China's rural area and other contexts.
