With the rapid improvement of city modernization, the contradiction between the road carrying capacity and the demand is becoming more and more prominent. Using intelligent transportation system (ITS) to solve the traffic problems has been paid more and more attention. As a focus of ITS, microscopic traffic simulation has far-reaching significance in improving the intelligence of urban road traffic. In this paper, it focuses on how to use virtual reality technology in microscopic traffic simulation, mainly to build the three-dimensional scene in microscopic traffic simulation by using OpenGL. Firstly, the basic principles of computer graphics has been introduced, such as translation transformation, rotation transformation and scaling transformation. Microscopic traffic simulation scenario has been created by using OpenGL rendering pipeline. Secondly, vehicle-dispatch model, vehicle-dispatch model and lane-changing model has been discussed. In order to further enhance the realism of the scene, viewpoint tracking, lighting and shadows were designed in the simulation. Meanwhile, LOD, graphics hardware acceleration and scene management has been implemented to further accelerate the rendering speed of complex traffic scenes. Finally, in the process of model realizing, thinking of Object-Oriented and MFC framework was adopted. At last, the microscopic traffic simulation system has achieved a better balance between simulation results and simulation efficiency by using OpenGL which was proved by the experiment.
