At present, traction substation automation and operational reliability of primary and secondary equipment has reached a very high level. But the appropriate level of technical training within the operating personnel is still relatively low, adopting a concep tual training mode of training. Based on the advanced computer software simulation technology, project "the research and development of the traction substation operation simulation system", which is aimed at the present situation of traction power supply system technology training work of pertinence is not strong and no fault rely, realizes the research and development of the different traction substation of Kunming railway administration with the primary and secondary equipment system and the computer monitoring system in consistent with the computer simulation system, for the railway bureau of the substation to carry out targeted training of personnel.This paper "research on traction power supply system fault simulation model and protection simulation" is a subject of the project "the research and development of the traction substation operation simulation system", through establishing traction power supply system fault model to simulate calculation various faults and simulating traction substation relay protection system, which provides support for the fault deal in the the operation simulation.This paper first gives a brief analysis of traction power supply system, and analyzes traction transformer’s wiring principle of five kinds of wiring, such as single-phase, three-phase, V/V, Scott, impedance balance. Using PSCAD/EMTDC electromagnetic transient simulation software, the paper establishs traction power supply system transient model, which are based on the above five kinds of connection form of traction transformer. It also simulates short circuit faults on fault model, including the short circuit fault of transformer both on the high side and the low side, short circuit fault of traction bus, short circuit fault of traction network, fault of compensation capacitor group. The fault simulation calculation results are consistent with the actual fault data.Simulation of traction substation relay protection system are realized. Based on Visual C++6.0, the main transformer protection program, high transformer reserve protection program, low transformer reserve protection program, feeder protection program, and capacitor protection program are written. The fault simulation results are sent to the above protection programs proving the validity of the protection action and cooperation between protections, and simulating the real response of traction power supply system failure phenomena and failure processes.
