Wire rope vibration absorber is used to absorb vibrations through the slip friction between strands or wires. When applied in a vibrated system, dynamic displacements are produced in the wire rope vibration absorber and thus, fraction damping between wire rope strands and between wires are induced. In this thesis, static and dynamics behaviors of wire rope vibration absorber are studied through theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The main work and conclusions are as follows:(1) The stress state of the wipe rope were analyzed with emphasis on the axial stress and bending stiffness of a single strand of the wire rope and the minimum value formula of wire rope are found. The deformation characteristics of strand and rope under axial tension were carried out with the software ANSYS together with the stratified equivalent approach. The load-deformation curves are obtained and the equivalent elastic modulus extracted. In addition, the axial tensile tests were carried out to verify the simulations.(2) A finite element model was established for the absorber, considering the complicated construction, uncertain pre-stress distribution and internal friction, in order to effectively simulate the vertical static stiffness of the wire-rope vibration absorber, in this thesis, a so-called virtue constitutive equation is proposed based on experimental data. Effects of the structural parameters i.e. winding angle, circle width and number on the static stiffness are investigated. It is found that the effect of the winding angle on the static stiffness is negligible. Increasing the circle width will reduce the stiffness in some extent. The more the circle number, the higher the he vertical static stiffness.(3) Dynamic characteristics of wipe rope vibration absorber were simulated and the natural frequencies and vibration modes are obtained. The vibration behaviors of wire rope vibration absorber with different damping ratios are compared through the harmonic response analysis. By performing the transient analysis, the impact responses of absorber under the dynamic loading were also investigated.
