Due to the design adopting low standards, there are a large number of diseases on substructure of railway bridges, which were old constructions in China. Among the substructures, enlarged foundation bases’diseases are most serious. In recent years the bridges destroyed by accidents often occur which are due to disease of the lower part of the railway bridge structure, to put an end to the bridge operation accidents and to ensure the safety of the bridge operation This article mainly discusses several diseases of enlarged foundations of existing railway bridge substructure, corresponding disease detection, assessment and remediation, in order to seek an effective method of tackling the problem of the bridge disease.This article discusses major types of diseases of existing railway bridge substructure, including:cracks on pier and foundation, scouring disease, the problem that lateral amplitude of pier top is over large. According to different diseases, I have made a deep investigation on detection methods and assessment methods of enlarged foundation of existing railway bridge substructures.Taking "safe depth of foundation","discrimination ratio of foundation depth buried","lateral amplitude of pier top" and "apparent crack width" as assessment indexes, some pertinent and operable assessment principles are put forward to realize reasonable assessment of the piers’ technical state grade. Based on the assessment results and bridge’s actual situation, this article also put forward the principles how to choose the remediation method according to different types of diseases.Taking a disease investigation on172bridges" substructure organized by a Railway Administration as engineering background and Qing Jiang River Bridge as an example, the application and application effect of the existing railway bridge substructure disease detection, assessment and remediation methods are emphatically introduced, which provides experiences for other bridges’disease regulation.
