Each city has its own bustling downtown embodied the history and culture. As thenecessary demonstration of the urban prosperity, the old commercial street is not only animportant part of urban space and the core place for the urban trade and leisure time, but alsoan important embodiment of the unique territorial features and cultural meanings. As thefastest perception in the human’s visual response, color usually conveys a mood and reflects acertain of cultural characteristics directly. The territorial environment and human factor makea commercial street form its unique color landscape culture and become the most appealingvisual signals of the city image.With the continuous development of society and economy, China is undergoing amassive urbanization process. In the construction and renovation for the old commercialstreet, some color problems, such as color convergence, color weakening and color confusion,are becoming increasingly apparent which completely ignored the territorial culture andhuman emotions of the commercial street. How to well use the color landscape method toprotect and show the local characteristics, to solve the contradiction between history andmodernity, tradition and technology, urban development and cultural heritage, to seek aharmonious development between local natural human environment and urban constructionand promote the creation of the city personality are the important content of this paper.In this paper, taking an old urban commercial street in China as study object, a kind oflandscape design try focusing on the local characteristic was made from the color perspectiveto explore a coexisting shaping method for the color landscape design of the old urbancommercial street and territorial culture. There are five important chapters. The first chapteris the introduction, which shows the topic purpose and study content by the initial summaryof the related concept and the research background. Through the overview and comparisonfor the research condition in related field, some problems concerning the color landscapedesign in China are summarized and analyzed. The second chapter introduces the relevantconcepts and theories, including the definition of the updated concept for the old urbancommercial street, local characteristics and color landscape, as well as some theory studies on color geography, color, landscape, urban planning and architecture, which provides afoundation for the following methodology study. The third chapter is about design factors andtreatment strategies in the local color landscape design of the old urban commercial street.With various of influence factors including natural environment, human environment andsocial environment, and some design elements such as architecture, vegetation, floor coveringand environment sketches, a new kind of treatment strategy is discussed. The fourth chapteris a design practice, choosing the Taiping South Road, a famous old commercial street inNanjing, as example, field survey and analysis was made to propose a design improvementplan. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper. How to build an old commercial streetwith local characteristics by using the color landscape design method is summarized and anoutlook on the development of this method in the future is made.
