With the rapid development of the technology, owing to the good characters, steel has been applied in the architectural field. At present, many places, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shandong and so on, have tried to build numerous high-rise and multiplayer steel buildings. The commencement of the new residential quarter of workers in Tiexi district and the Dagongbao steel residential building community in Anshan represents the initiation of the steel residential building in Northeast region.Owing to frequent snow disaster, especially the snowstorm in Northeast China in2007and the snow disaster in North China in2008, most steel structures had been destroyed to make a great economic loss. The research result shows that the snow load of the disaster in2007is much bigger than the normal snow load in the code, especially in the parapet wall whose snow load is5times bigger than normal snow load. A lot of steel factories were broken in the snow disaster. The excessive snow load is a big challenge to the development of the steel residential structure in Northeast China. So it is necessary to study the mechanics performance of steel residential structure under the excessive load.With the actual project as the background, the paper designs two kinds of steel residential structure and adopts the analysis software MIDAS GEN to analyze the failure process of the steel residential structure when snowing in the construction phase, in the normal service condition and under the excessive snow load. The mechanical performance of steel residential structure under excessive snow loading in the whole-span and half-span is analyzed in the paper. Based on analysis on strength and stability of structure, the results show that although the dense bed board is put on the steel beam so that the unstability of structure is not appeared in the middle span under positive moment, owing to the continuous beam, the distortion unstability is appeared under negative moment. On the basis of analysis on the structures under action of the low temperature, heavy snow and high wind, the construction measure and design suggestion are proposed to avoid the extreme situation with taking into consideration of temperature stress, snow load, wind load. Based on analysis on the double sloping roof with the uniform and non-uniform distribution of snow load, the paper calculates the strength and stability of the main components of the structure. After strengthening the weak components, the analysis is made again to compare the performance before strengthening with after strengthening. The analysis results show that to strengthen the main beam in the roof is an excellent way to avoid the failure of roof.
