In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s economy, the number ofmotor vehicles has increased unprecedentedly during the process of urbanization.Traffic congestion has cropped up, which seriously restrained the economic growth.Currently, the traffic control system is based on fixed time, that is, single form ofcontrol and unable to vary in real time, which results in lower utilization of the road, causing unnecessary traffic jams. Therefore, the design of the intelligenttransportation system that can allocate time automatically depending on the trafficflow is of great significance. In this paper, a real-time intelligent traffic signal control system is designedunder the circumstances where the intersection traffic lights are fixed time, and didnot fully display the countdown in many cities. This paper use top-down designapproach, detecting the traffic with magnetic induction coil, writing the controlsoftware with Verilog HDL. This system consists of traffic detection module, trafficstatistics module, divider block, traffic light control module and countdown displaymodule, is able to allocate time to the lights based on the straight lane traffic, thecountdown can be displayed simultaneously in all directions facilitating the driver topredict.Last, simulating with ModelsimSE10.0c, and synthesizing with Quartu II11.0,the final program can be verified on FPGA chip EP4CE15F17C8. The result suggeststhat this system meets the requirements and is able to allocate time to the signallights.
