Locating series capacitors to compensate the inductive impedance of transmission lines in the long transmission lines is the valid method to improve the utilization ratio and transmission power of built transmission lines. In the actual operation of series capacitor compensation platform in San Bao (500kV series capacitor compensation platform) or other ones in China, when malfunctions in transmission lines happen or overvoltage caused by other transient processes occurs on series compensation capacitors, overvoltage protection device-spark gaps will generate transient overvoltage. It is extremely detrimental to the transmission of load power and the safety running of power grid and should be avoided. At the design phase of series capacitor compensation project, generally the transient processes of series capacitor compensation devices will be simulated when the transmission lines are under malfunction. However, experiments like transients in spark gaps generating transient overvoltage among the equipment are not allowed on the platform while the series capacitor compensation device is operating due to various reasons that numerous types of equipment are located on the platform and closely connected, and the series capacitor compensation potential is the same as transmission lines. Furthermore, owing to a great deal of equipment and the high costs, building series capacitor compensation platform in laboratory is not feasible either. Thus, in order to reduce the experimental expenditure and improve the experimental efficiency, new experimental methods, suitable measuring equipment and circuit analysis need to be improved together.A simulated series capacitor compensation platform has been designed and built in terms of those issues mentioned above. Through the simplified modulation to the simulated series capacitor compensation platform and acquired simulated data, proper experimental methods and measuring devices have been determined. Furthermore, multiple sets of data that adopting pressure limiting device or not have been obtained respectively through experiments made on the simulated series capacitor compensation platform. By comparing and analyzing the data, a valid control measure to overvoltage has been carried out. This conclusion is significantly meaningful for the maintenance of 500kV series capacitor compensation platform.
