China’s hydroelectric energy exploitation has been developing rapidly in recent years and thirteen major hydropower base has been gradually built. So the reservoirs optimal operation have become the study focus in this field. The reservoirs optimal operation is an effective way to increase the utilization efficiency of water resources and the economic benefit of the hydropower station as well as a kind of conditioned nonlinear planning issue. The main problem it faces is how to convert the actual reservoirs optimal operation into an appropriate mathematical model and how to effectively find the solution for this model.This paper firstly analyzes the basic principle of artificial fish swarm algorithm and chaos optimization algorithm. Aiming at the defect of artificial fish swarm algorithm that is likely to be trapped in partial optimal value, chaos optimization algorithm is introduced for improvement. This mixed algorithm not only retains the quickness and simplicity of artificial fish swarm algorithm, but also possesses the ergodicity of chaos optimization algorithm, which can avoid partial optimal value and get the optimizing capacity in the large and quick searching speed. Then orienting to the reservoirs optimal operation, this paper establishes a mathematical model that applies chaos-artificial fish swarm algorithm to the solution of the model and makes a detailed analysis with specific examples.The simulation results of the examples indicate that chaos-artificial fish swarm algorithm can achieve a satisfactory result in the medium and long-term generation optimal operation and lift the electricity generating efficiency and benefits, which has much practicability.
