With the rapid socio-economic development, a new energy revolution characterized by clean energy and smart grid is advancing,in which the smart grid plays a central and leading role and has become the development trend of the future power grid. Smart substation is an important foundation and strong support of the smart grid and is the source and the unit of collecting and operating data. In addition, it is also the link among the power generation,distribution and utilization,occupying the most critical position.So it is significant to study the smart substation by technical and economic method.Through a large collection of related materials,based on the understanding of smart substation technology and full life-cycle cost theory, the paper analyzes the technical feasibility of Nanyang South 500 kV smart substation and then in the economy,utilizes the theory of the full life-cycle costs to analyze the investment costs of the project by contrasting with the conventional substation. And calculate its net present value and payback period to analyze its profitability finally.First, the paper introduces the theory of smart substation technology and technological economics on the basis of domestic and foreign scholars’ studies,so as to lay the theoretical foundation for smart substation project. Secondly, the paper makes the description of the project in three aspects——the project overview, the related network planning and the importance of the substation construction.Then this is the main part of the article.Analyze its technical level which consists of two parts——electric and the secondary system,involving the intellectualization of various devices and the device settings of the station level,the bay level and the process level.Besides,to analyze its economic benefits,the paper calculates the investment cost of the smart substation with full life-cycle cost theory, and compares it with conventional substation,highlighting its big advantage.And through calculating the net present value and the payback period,we can draw the conclusion that the project is feasible and has good profitability.
