The high reliability of operation of power system is required, however, to ensure the stable operation of any circuit components of the power system is rather complex. Stability and reliability of electric power system is determined by the different characteristic parameters of the system, and the main influence factors includes the different impedance between parallel lines, power factor, the change of input power and the change of load etc.. So lots of power equipment has been manufactured. Phase shifting transformer is one of important equipment in the power system.At present, the phase-shifting transformer is a kind of application of electric power equipment used widely abroad within the electric power system. The function, classification, basic principles, schematic diagram and operation characteristics of phase-shifting transformer in power network have been summarized in this paper by learning the foreign articles or books, which will provide the reference for Chinese power system equipment. Secondly, the electrical characteristics of transformer insulating oil and internal insulation medium have been stated and also the factors, which will affect the electric strength of insulation medium, have been discussed. The finite element calculation method for electric field strength has been analyzed and summarized based on analyzing the characteristics of the electric field inside the transformer. Finally, the electric field analysis and calculation of main insulation structure of one high voltage, large capacity of single core phase shifting transformer have been performed in this paper. The whole area of main insulation is divided into the upper part and the lower part of the inner and outer winding, and the middle part between the inner winding and outer winding. The electric field distribution in the above area has been obtained by using finite element analysis and simulation, and the maximum beginning electric field strength value has been found in the weak area. The insulation margin of each power line in the electric field has been obtained by EXCEL software for each oil gap.Research and calculation for the main insulation in this paper provided the reference basis for the develop of high voltage, large capacity of single core phase shifting transformer.
