Cave dwelling is one of the most ancient and traditional ways of dwelling in Loess Plateau region. Due to the geographical features of Qingyang, the residents lived in caves for quite a long time. With the economic and social development, the cave dwellers left their caves and built houses. Hence cave dwelling, as an ancient cultural heritage, has started to decline. Heritage protection in Qingyang, however, is facing great challenges. The paper makes analytical research on the origin and development of cave dwelling in Qingyang, makes discussion on cave culture based on the previous research and proposed ideas on the cave culture. Sample survey was adopted to make filed investigation on caves and cave culture in Qingyang, through which relevant data was collected and fruitful written materials and photographs were acquired. It was found that a small fraction of residents still lived in caves and the cave culture had been inherited among modern residents. However, the protection of cave dwelling is dominated by their revolutionary feature and is far less than enough. The major reason why caves are not under enough protection is that caves in Qingyang have not been attached great importance to by the government and they are not regarded as the cultural heritage in the real sense. There is still a long way to go for the in inheritance of cave culture. The advantage of revolutionary culture has not been developed;tourism and cave culture has not been combined adequately; cave culture in Qingyang has not promoted profoundly. For the problems on the cultural heritage, the author proposes that, in terms of the protection of cave dwelling, a museum themed cave culture should be established in a place with convenient transportation condition in Qingyang, and the tools originally used for digging caves can be displayed in the museum. The experience of building caves can be drawn to build modern houses. In terms of the cultural heritage,we should strengthen the publicity of cave culture and combine it with tourism, sothat cave culture, a splendid cultural heritage, can be inherited along with its distinct cultural value while boosting the economy of Qingyang.
