There are many problems in power distribution network, such as low voltage, too great transmission losses, shortage of reactive power, and so on, because the construction of power distribution network lags, the aging of power supply equipment is serious, grid structure is irrational, power supply radius is too long, and the supporting points of power are not enough, which make the power distribution network get far away from meeting the development demand of national economy. Therefore, how to solve low voltage, high loss and consumption and other relevant problems in the power distribution network economically and efficiently becomes the key emphasis of electric operators in work.Series compensation technique can improve line voltage and reduce line loss through compensating line inductive reactance by capacitive reactance, which is an ideal solution for solving the existing problems in the power distribution network. But traditional series compensation devices have a series of problems, such as high cost, large volume, difficult operation maintenance, big influence on line relay protection, est., which cause that series compensation does not show its own technological advantages in practical applications. With the appearance of fast-switching series compensation devices, the problems mentioned above will be solved one by one.The paper firstly introduces the principle of series compensation technique, analyzes its role in improving voltage, reducing loss, increasing transmission capacity and improving power flow distribution, and compares series compensation with shunt compensation, to obtain their own scope of application respectively.Secondly, the paper introduces the reasons for setting by-pass equipments for series compensation devices, shows the structure the by-pass equipments of traditional series compensation devices, and introduces the innovative structure of fast-switching series compensation devices. The calculation method for the capacity of series compensation capacitor is derived based on formula, and the best installation location of series compensation capacitor is given through flow calculation.Finally, the paper studies the influence of series compensation on line relay protection in depth, provides preliminary solution and determines the influence of fast-switching series compensation devices on the power distribution network through PSCAD modeling and simulation based on theoretical analysis.
