In recent years, with the process of smart grid construction accelerated, more variety, a greater flow of business types gradually add in electric power communication network. The main electric power communication network service is from the traditional TDM business gradually transformed into IP packet service. Relay protection to undertake an important responsibility of protecting the safe and stabl e operation of power grid, therefore, it must be able to ensure that technically highly reliable, highly sensitive, at the same time also have quick acting and selectivity. But as a result of PTN based on packet switching technology, the reliability of bea ring TDM business remains to be seen, so the PTN alternative SDH technology has long failed to become the mainstream of the electric power communication network technology. And with the extensive application of PTN, PTN technology, performance of PTN transmission equipment has been strengthened. So, in theory, PTN already have bearing ability of relay protection business.This paper has researched on PTN bearing delay relay protection services. First, the research analyzes the current differential protection based on the existing SDH network transmission delay of the mechanism, on the basis of constant parameters delay calculation formula is given. And based on this, advances the randomness characteristics of time delay, and transmission delay of the random mathematical model is established, using Matlab simulation method for the simulation analysis of the proposed model. Second, starting from the actual demand of electric power communication network, the principle of PTN technology is studied, and analyzed t he transmission delay characteristics of PTN, theoretically demonstrates the PTN carrying the feasibility of the differential protection business, and gives the theoretical formula of transmission delay. Third, set up a platform of PTN transmission laborat ory environment, on the bearing E1 PTN business and Ethernet transmission performance of the business conducted a comprehensive test, and obtained the PTN conclusion that could satisfy the requirement of differential protection business transmission. Fourt h, based on a certain electric power company existing PTN test network, on the bearing properties of PTN in the present network conditions were tested, and compared with the theoretical value, laboratory test results are compared, and relevant conclusions. This topic research content in the future by PTN applied to electric power communication network provides a certain reference technology, have a certain engineering significance.
