Since the 21 st century, with the rapid development of smart grid and network communication technology, optical technology and other related technologies, substation operation mode is gradually changing, therefore, smart substation emerged, especially in recent years, smart substation technology is developing rapidly, now there has been many smart substations all over the country. By using merge cells, intelligent terminals,electronic transformers and other smart devices and IEC61850 standards-based unified standardized information model, smart substation can collect information digitally, and make it sharing with each other in the wide-area grid, this provides a solid technical foundation for protection and control based on wide-area information.The action criterion that traditional relay uses is usually based on local information,which can only reflect the running state of a point or small area in the grid system, unable to grasp the operational status of the whole network of information, therefore, it cannot ensure global safe and stable operation. Therefore, using protection and control based on wide-area information in the field of smart substation is appropriate. Currently, there are many studies about wide-area grid protection and control, but most use it as backup protection, and the study on wide-area primary protection and control within smart substation is limited to certain aspects of the theory and test, and there is no authoritative and comprehensive test data which can verify its feasibility and reliability.In this paper, Liaoning Electric Power Research Institute depends on "Liaoning Chaoyang 66 KV grid dynamic simulation of a wide area of special protection" project,and explores the related questions on wide-area primary protection and automatic switch using in the area of smart substation, and studies the programs of the wide-area protection and control systems in the area of smart substation, analysis their feasibility and reliability when used in the area of smart substation, then sum up the prospects of wide-area protection and control system in the area of smart substation.This paper uses several Chaoyang Mashan district 66 KV smart substations as test specific background, building a system of real-time simulation model depending on RTDS, which is connected to a closed loop and power amplifier, fault recorders and other conventional test equipment as well as the actual secondary equipment the simulation test platform, and then study the principle of wide-area primary protection, backup protection and automatic switch, and combined with the results of the simulation, analysis and evaluate the system.
