With the trend of modern ships to be high speed, large scale, specialization, the shortcomings of the ships with traditional propulsion systems have gradually emerged. Hydraulic transmission has the advantages such as higher mass specific power, better safety performance. Different from the traditional propulsion system, the propeller is connected to a hydraulic motor which is installed in a pod that is can be rotated in 360 degree. It is called hydraulic podded propulsion system. This propulsion system has the advantage of the hydraulic transmission and can realize vectored thrust of the ship. The rotation of the podded propulsion is realized through the slewing system, and it is an important part of the podded propulsion. The slewing system’s dynamic characteristics directly affect the working performance of the podded propulsion.In this thesis, a slewing hydraulic system was designed for a 2320t public service vessel. Then the match calculation was used to complete the lectotype for the main part of the slewing hydraulic system. Finally, the whole hydraulic system was simulated.(1)Various kinds of slewing mechanism and their hydraulic system are researched, and the slewing hydraulic system is designed on podded propulsion.(2)Determined the performance parameter of the main part of the system on the base of matching calculation completed the lectotype design according to the products of the market.(3)The slewing hydraulic system simulation model was built by LMS AMESim software which is on the principle of system oriented modeling, the load model and the control system model of pump were established by using Simulation tool, combined the slewing hydraulic system, load system and the control system model of pump, the whole simulation model was completed.The simulation results show that the slewing hydraulic system can achieve the steering command well. All research results play an important theory-instructing role in improvement, optimization and design of slewing hydraulic system, and it have a good chance to be applied in practice.
