The optical axis deflection error caused by errors of prisms in binocular system will damage the coaxiality of optical axis, increase the off-axis aberration, rise to too large wave aberration in each tube and the nonidentity of two tubes in focusing, which will reduce the image quality and create discomfort during use. By taking the rhombic prism and Schmidt ridge prism as examples, we propose a new approach for error analysis of optical axis deflection caused by prisms in binocular system. The main contributions of the research work presented in this dissertation are as follows:(1) Mathematical models that contain errors are developed for the prisms and the prism errors are divided into two parts, manufacturing errors and position errors. For manufacturing errors, only size errors and angle errors are considered; position errors are divided into translation errors and rotation errors. All these errors are contained in the math models of prisms in the form of parameters.(2) A prism is rotated and translated as a whole by rotating and translating its vertices. The matrix of a point rotating about an arbitrary line is used and through which the process is greatly simplified.(3) The Monte Carlo method is used to put values to the parameters and exact ray tracing is doing. Through multiple computations, the statistical charts of optical axis deflection error are obtained. We analysis the different effects of different parameters and the synergistic effects of multiple parameters on the optical axis deflection.
