Nowadays, renewable energy power-generation technologies have some shortcomings, like intermittent and uncertain. These shortcomings can’t guarantee power supply reliability. To solve this problem, energy storage system is needed in an independent system. But, most of these energy storage systems are composed by single energy storage device which can’t provide both high energy density and long cycle life. With the progress of technology, hybrid energy storage system is widely used depend on its good energy storage features.First, this paper introduced the concepts of DGs. It also introduced the significance of energy storage system and the disadvantages of energy storage system which composed by single energy storage device. Then, hybrid energy storage system is introduced intensively. This paper introduced the concepts and structures of photovoltaic power technology, wind power technology and hybrid energy storage system. Their working principles and mathematical models were also introduced intensively. This paper used diesel generator system to balance the generating power and the loads.In this paper, two layers of coordinated dispatch strategies had been used. In the first layer, diesel generators and batteries are coordinated dispatched each other. In the second layer, the power of batteries and super capacitors were distributed based on different time scales. The optimization models of independent renewable system were constructed and the objective function was proposed. Genetic algorithm was used to solve the objective function. With the example system, it verified the correctness and effectiveness of the models, the algorithm and the coordinated dispatch strategies.At last, a coordinated controller of hybrid energy storage system was designed by language C# on Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 software based on the coordinated dispatch strategies. Communication protocol of Modbus was also introduced. The function of coordinated controller was showed by the instance.
