In recent years, the scale of highway construction is on the increase and transport infrastructure is improving progressively. However, lack of edges and cracks occur in pavement frequently. Therefore effective ways are needed to make the performance of pavement better and stretch the life of highway. China has a long coastline and the natural gravel resource is rich, but the natural gravel is not widely used in highway construction. Based on study on performance of natural pebble concrete, this paper demonstrates its technical feasibility on highway application. Furthermore, the paper evaluates its economic rationality through life-cycle cost analysis of natural pebble concrete highway project.For the sake of investigating performance of natural pebble concrete, the paper sets both mechanical property test and durability test on natural pebble concrete and common stone concrete. In order to ensure the experimental results better used in engineering practice, a series of tests on raw materials basic properties are carried out in the first place and then mixing proportion design of the two kinds of concrete is determined through controlling the same fluidity of natural pebble concrete and crushed stone concrete. The design of mechanical properties experiments is preparing different strength grades of concrete specimens and then carrying out compression strength test and rupture strength test. On the basis of test results, compare the differences between natural pebble concrete and crushed stone concrete. Durability test is divided into two parts:shrinkage test in dry environment and durability test after freezing and thawing. Drying shrinkage test aims to mensurate shrinkage coefficient of the two kinds of concrete that has the same fluidity. Freeze thaw durability test aims to weight the quality of concrete specimens under twenty-five, fifty, seventy-five, one-hundred times’freezing and thawing cycle. Concrete frost resisting property is described through accounting quality failure rate.Cost study on natural pebble concrete highway project is from project life cycle perspective. Life-cycle cost model, which consists of building cost calculation model, operation cost calculation model, demolition cost calculation model, environmental impact cost calculation model and social impact cost calculation model, is built firstly. On the foundation of the model, life cycle costs of natural pebble concrete highway project case and crushed stone concrete highway project case are calculated. Through case cost analysis, economy of natural pebble concrete highway engineering is evaluated.Through research of performance of natural pebble concrete and cost analysis, final conclusion can be reached that performance of natural pebble road is good. Both its mechanical property and durability performance are better than crushed stone concrete. Besides in the economic field, the life cycle cost of natural pebble concrete highway is lower compared with crushed stone concrete highway. The results provide theoretical guidance to the usage of natural pebble concrete in highway and make natural pebble more widely used in the future.
