Xi’an ground fractures is a special kind of regional geological hazard, which brings great harm to Xi’an city construction, industrial and agricultural development, and to the people’s life safety and property safety, it constitutes the great threat, but also seriously restricts the Xi’an city planning, reasonable and effective utilization of land, the groundwater exploitation and the development and utilization of urban underground space. As the particularity of Xi’an ground fractures caused ground settlement disaster and the seriousness of the threat to the urban development process and the safe for human settlement, aroused great importance of the geological community, and the study of ground fractures in recent decades, in the investigation, the formation mechanism of the ground fractures and the prevention and control countermeasures have made many research results.In this paper, a large collection of investigation data and the research results of Xi’an ground fractures, synthesizing the in-situ survey and drilling, the indoor geotechnical test and numerical simulation of ground fractures, to analyze emphatically the structure of the damage mechanism of the building across ground fractures and the influence width of ground fractures.Firstly, collecting the regional geological data of ground fractures, and simply expounding the geological background of the development and the regularities of distribution of Xi’an ground fractures. Then through the investigation of Xi’an ground fractures damaging to buildings, collecting the information of building damage under the influence of ground fractures, and setting the mechanical model of building foundation across ground fractures under the action of the ground fissures, from the macroscopic, summary and analysis the regular pattern of the damage to buildings across ground fractures, so as to study the failure mechanism of ground fractures for building foundation.Secondly, on the basis of scientific research on ground fractures have been established, from three aspects, such as the active characteristics of the Xi’an ground fractures movement, the differences of the rock and soil physical and mechanical properties on both sides of ground fractures and the rupture zone and affected zone of the ground fractures to emphatically discuss the main influence factors of the influence of ground fractures on the buildings across ground fractures.Finally, based on finite element numerical simulation analysis, to study the mode of the failure mechanism of the building foundation across different angle of dip of the ground fractures and the influence scope of different angle of dip of the ground fractures, and initially propose the prevention and control measure of buildings across ground fractures.
