Considering the severe energy shortage and environmental pollution produced by consuming fossil fuels in China, in this paper, a novel oscillating-body wave energy converter, which has three degree of freedom and could absorb wave energy in multiple directions, is proposed to meet the urgent requirements of abundant, renewable and eco-friendly energy resources. An elaborate analysis is accomplished to study this novel WEC.Firstly, state of the art is reviewed. And WECs are classified according to the working principles. Each type of working principle and main technical aspects are illustrated. Both of the defeats and benefits of typical WECs are summarized. Then, the novel oscillation-body WEC, which is more suitable for wave resource condition in China, is proposed to meet working requirements by utilizing the GF set theory. The mechanism of this WEC could be represented by 1PU-6UPS.Based on the Airy wave theory and F-K presupposition method, the mathematical model for the dynamic response of the vertical cylindrical buoy under wave excitation is built. The movement response of the buoy is analyzed under variable wave heights and periods. The kinematics model of this WEC is built by conducting mechanism analysis. Based on Newton-Euler method, the dynamics model is built. Both of the length variation curves and force curves of the six parallel hydraulic cylinders are achieved. The fuzzy reliability of motion accuracy of this converter is also studied. Based on the kinematics analysis, the equation for calculating the power converted by this WEC is achieved. Finally, based on FEA software, the FEA analysis models of both the key parts and the whole device are built to achieved the inherent frequencies and corresponding models of vibration, which would provide basis for design and work of this converter.
