With the increasingly serious problem of environment and energy, traditional internal combustion engine vehicles are facing great challenges, and the energy saving and environment protection of new energy vehicles have been the most cutting-edge issue. Range-extended electric vehicle is a reasonable choice for city electric bus for its advantages: long driving range, low emission, simple structure, pure electric mode, etc.In this paper, the requirement power of the whole vehicle is calculated, according to the requirement of dynamic system of whole vehicle and driving mode. And the selection and parameters matching of key parts have been done, according to the whole vehicle operating condition and operating characteristic of auxiliary power units.And the formula of energy distribution of whole vehicle and control strategy of APU are researched. To optimize the SOC of battery and engine’s work area, the thermostat and power following control strategy are designed. For APU, the multiple speed points power following control strategy of engine is designed, and also the following pattern of output power. The complete control strategy is confirmed, which lay a good foundation for the simulation and experiment research.A simulation model that applied to range-extended APU are built through the second development of engine, generator, power storage battery module in AVISOR, and the rationality of the parameters matching and control strategy have been verified. The test bench which is used to the experiment research of APU is established. The communication of bench experiment, response test of speed and torque of engine experiment, engine speed PID control experiment, electricity generation experiment, etc have been accomplished, which establish a well foundation for the subsequent development of APU.
