From the new Stone Age to the modern times, the ‘wall’ has a history of more than 6000 years. In the long history of evolution, the wall has precipitated extremely wealthy history and culture and engraved profound traditional thought. The wall is one of the most common and important landscape elements in the area of landscape design, which not only constitutes the building, encloses the space but also divides the domain. In the modern landscape design, the designers inject the wall with a lot of fresh elements which not only makes its forms more and more diversification and internationalization, but also makes the wall gradually transform from a simple building element to an order and criterion. Along with the rapid development of urbanization, the wall slowly removes its coats as a defense and transforms to the material carriers under the background of the modern times, which makes it more conform to individually psychological and aesthetic requirements and social needs. The modern designers have conducted a variety of analyses for its functions from the multiple perspectives so as to deduce various forms of the wall.Rambling over the city streets, a lot of people will find some often overlooked walls, which occupy parts of the limited lands in the urban public space and can form certain images in people’s consciousness. The walls reflecting the connotation and quality of the city are called ‘landscape wall’. The landscape wall in the urban space is constructed altogether through its external representation and space expression. As a progressive and regressive landscape, the landscape wall can form the visual focus and also exits as a background foiling the structures in the surrounding environment. The concerns of the author about the landscape wall stem from its changeful forms and the embodiment of the cultural connotation from a large number of well known domestic and international landscape projects in recent years. From these projects, the author deeply appreciate that in the modern landscape, the wall is no longer a simple ‘bounding wall’ confining space boundaries, but more a sketch form as an independent form of ‘landscape wall’ which enables the functions and characteristics of the wall to be maximum discovered.Based on the wall as the breakthrough point, the study object in this paper is the landscape wall in the urban public space and we will investigate the landscape wall from three aspects, i.e., space construction, landscaping methods, cultural expression of the wall body. First of all, the concepts, historical evolution and cultural connotation of the ‘wall’ and ‘landscape wall’ are discussed. The relations and mutual effects between the landscape wall and the urban public space are expounded. Secondly, the performance factors of the landscape wall in urban public space are summarized through five aspects. A variety of attributes and features for the landscape wall are analyzed on different levels. Specifically, the performance of the landscape wall in five aspects is analyzed, including the morphological characteristics, the functional characteristics, the visual characteristics, the aesthetical features and the cultural features, from the dominant modeling, color, texture, light shadow to the recessive cultural artistic conception, aesthetic expression layer by layer progressive. Then the specific design ideas and methods of the landscape wall in the urban public space and how to reflect the taste and connotation of the city are summed up. Finally, we will make the landscape wall as a landscaping element return to space systems and explore the relationships between the landscape wall and the space composition. At the same time, combining Chinese and western instances, we further analyze the construction of the landscape wall in space. This paper is mainly to study the correlation between the existence forms of the landscape wall and space effects of the urban public space, try to form a relatively comprehensive cognition for the space construction of the landscape wall. As a consequence, this paper is expected to play an active role in guiding the design of the specific landscape wall and have an enlightening influence on the study of modern landscape design and other designs.
