Mountainous region, which generously exists in China?s geographical environment, is the extending of mountain cities with various types of spatial morphology. However, more and more mountain cities are being destroyed and disappearing due to the inadequate cognition to the particularity of mountainous region. The theory of human settlements in mountainous region and urban spatial form has become the research hotspot under the circumstance that urban construction land is getting less and less, but the potential of mountainous region development is huge in China.A huge number of mountain cities locate in the atypical mountainous region of Northwestern China, they have their own specific spatial morphology and development because of the special geographical environment, social economy and historical culture. The city?s spatial morphology develops integratedly under the influence of economy, society, culture, environment and technology. The research on urban spatial form can indicate the connection between outside and inside of the city construction so that the process of the city?s development and regularity can be well understood and learnt. For the reasons above, my tutor proposed that the spatial morphology should be considered as a key point to research on the north, south, middle south, southeastern coastal, northwest and southeast of China respectively in order to create a database to support the research on construction of nationwide mountain cities. The paper analyses the influence of cultural geographical environment from the ancient, modern and contemporary times based on Northwestern China as research range, typical cases as research point. About 30 typical cities of Northwestern China are selected as examples in the paper to analyze the development of mountain cities and the connection between city spatial morphology and nature, society, economy, culture evolution with the research method of urban morphology, new history and comparison method,to sum up the characters of spatial morphology, process rules and dynamic mechanism, then forming the atlas of spatial morphology types of mountain cities in Northwestern ChinaThe paper consists of seven chapters, three parts. The first and second chapter are theoretical researches, the following three chapters are empirical research, the last two chapters are theoretical conclusion. The structure and main content of the paper are as follows:Chapter one: Introduction. The research origin, goal, significance, related concept, current research situation, research method and frame are mentioned in this chapter.Chapter two: The development of mountain cities in Northwestern China. The original environment of mountain cities in Northwestern China is analyzed from the factors of natural environment, economic development and culture. The distribution characteristics and types of mountain cities in Northwestern China are summarized.Chapter three, four and five: The evolution process of mountain cites? spatial morphology in Northwestern China during different historical period. 1) The development background and construction situation of mountain cities. 2) The analysis of typical mountain cities? natural environment and evolution process. 3) The influencing factors of mountain cites? spatial morphology is analyzed from the angle of society, economy, politics and culture. 4) The spatial morphology of mountain cities in different eras from the angle of landscape pattern, city edge and inner city, and spatial morphology types of mountain cities are concluded.Chapter six: Conclusion of spatial morphology and process rules of mountain cities in Northwestern China. The general characters of spatial morphology is concluded through combination of landscape pattern and plane modality, and the process rules and dynamic mechanism are concluded.Chapter seven: Summary and outlook. The main conclusion of the paper is summarized and the outlook to the future research of this topic is also proposed in this chapter.
