Walking is the main way for people to take metro, as well as the convergence of metro and other various modes of transportation. Ensuring metro station areas a convenient, comfortable and safe walking environment, is the key not only to achieve function integration and attract passengers, but also to promote green transportation system and guarantee the sustainable development of city. This paper takes 9 residential district metro stations in Chongqing as subject, analysis and evaluate their pedestrian accessibility, walking environment quality and potential problems, and ultimately put forward serval corresponding optimization strategies. The first chapter, introduction. By combing the relevant literature and concepts, this chapter tries to explain three factors which could impact on the pedestrian accessibility of metro station areas, ie walking distance, walking time and walking psychology. On this basis, builds the method and framework to research the walking environment of metro station areas in mountainous city. The second chapter, outline of walking environment investigation at metro station areas. First, to determine the environmental factors that can effect on walking activities, by analyzing the psychological needs of pedestrian; secondly, to determine principles and criteria to evaluate the accessibility of walking; and finally, by researching multiple metro stations in Chongqing, groups the existing stations into three categories according to their terrain conditions and settlements type, ie Old Town- Mountain Region, Old Town- slope Region and the Metro- slope Region, and selects 9 representative stations for further study work. The third chapter, walking environment investigation and analysis based on the pedestrian accessibility. By measuring satellite remote sensing maps and taking valid field research, this chapter collects the objective data of evaluation factors for space features that connected to pedestrian accessibility and walking environment; through questionnaires and platform interviews, obtains subjective satisfaction reports for walking environment given by walking users of metro station. Then, using the SPSS software to analysis and screen urban design controllable parameters that effect pedestrian accessibility. At last, compares and analyses the streets network index, height index, intersection index and environment quality indicators, and probes into the typical features and dominant problems for each type’s walking environment in metro station areas of mountainous city. On the basis of current pedestrian accessibility and walking environment learning and analysis, this chapter references successful experience at domestic and abroad, combines the mountainous terrain characteristics, proposes serval valid solution for optimized design of walking environment at metro station area in moutainous city. The fifth Chapter, summary and induction. Summarizes the researching content, proposes the deficiency of this study, and looks into the future of the follow-up research.
