3D Laser Scanning technology has been extensively studied because of it can quickly get a large number of the target surface point cloud data. But for the latter part of the technology of modeling by the point cloud of large buildings are still lags behind relatively. We need to get the cloud data processing method which can obtain the point cloud data which are high-quality and precision fast, reliable, and automated from the massive point cloud data. How to get used to establish a high quality point cloud data model is a difficulty in current research.In this paper, we details the working principle of the 3D laser scanner, analyzed the sources of scanning error, and discussed the point cloud data processing method such as point cloud data de-noising, stitching, streamlined, segmentation, surface reconstruction combined with a large number of experiments, and proposed a set of detailed operating procedures based on existing method of point cloud data processing, to achieve a modern building from the initial point cloud data acquisition to the final 3D model. Concrete embodiment in the following points:(1) Starting on view of precision, put forward some engineering indicators from the point cloud data collected. Analysis the precision of the instrument before data collection, using the error propagation theory to analyze the acquisition of point cloud data can achieve the required accuracy of the late application.(2) Preliminary stitching the point cloud with the control point, and then accurate stitching the point cloud with common overlapping region of the point cloud, which significantly improves the stitching accuracy. De-noising the point cloud data, make the deviation of the data points approaching micron level. Select the most appropriate point cloud to streamline point cloud data combined with the appearance of the shape of modern buildings and the necessary data required for modeling, research the best streamline rate to meet the requirements of modeling, and then streamline a lot of parts of the point cloud data under the premise of retain its characteristics.(3)Analysis and research on the characteristics of two kinds of different modeling methods, one is surface reconstruction method, other is parametric modeling. Try to use the two kind methods modeling the modern building. We compared two kinds of the modeling methods from the model details, the overall effect, the amount of data models and the modeling time. Experimental results show that the parametric method is more suitable for the modeling of large buildings.
