With the rapid development of wind power industry, technology for diagnosing fault of wind turbines remotely has become the focus of attention R & D personnel. WTDR(the Data Recorder of Wind Turbines) is an equipment based on wind power network that could record the quasi-realtime data of alone-turbine operation. It could save the operational data of wind turbines within the past three days and generate fault data packets then transfer them to the supervisory system promptly. WTDR could provide the data for the analysis and troubleshooting of significant fault of the prototype. It also could help remote technicians guide field operation and maintenance personnel to operate the wind turbines, and make the pre-examination when the wind turbines are unattended so that it would be convenient for operation and maintenance personnel to prepare spare parts.This paper mainly describes the following areas:1. Summarized the network structure and data interaction of current cluster and the key role of data logger in some industrial products. Considering that the entire wind power supervisory system demands for the high-quality operation data, put forward a method that installing a WTDR in the tower base of wind turbines and inserting it into the cluster of wind turbines.2. Analyzed the demand that WTDR implements the data exchange with the local controller, the central supervisory system and the remote supervisory system. Defined the exchange specification of information in the network. Analyzed the communicative protocol among different devices.3. According to the requirements of WTDR and basic theory analysis, the design of hardware system has been done from the hardware, the physical interface and the connection in the network and so on. In order to improve the equipment’s utilization, the WTDR has been divided into WTDR-H(installed in the tower base) and WTDR-T(the portable device could operate WTDR-H).4. Designed and tested the WTDR’s prototypic system.Designed and constructed the environment platform that could simulate running of the wind turbine based on Aerodyn master control system. Used Twin CAT ADS protocol to achieve data exchange between Beckhoff PLC and prototypic of WTDR-H / T. Used binary stream file to record the operation data. Used TCP / IP protocol to realize the data exchange between prototypic of WTDR-H and WTDR-T, and realized that prototypic of WTDR-H could operate on prototypic of WTDR-T.There have some Innovations been Descripted in this paper: Firstly,added a WTDR to wind power electrical system, the structure of main control systemhas been optimized; Secondly,used binary stream-file to store historical operating data of wind turbines, reduced the storage space and enhanced the access speed;Lastly, generated the fault data packet, improved the efficiency of the fault retrieval and fault diagnosis.
