For pre-stressed steel structures, it is no doubt that cables and composites relative to them are the key members. Although there are lots of related study about the working mechanism and numerical analyzing methods of friction-slippage continuous cable, perfect system of theoretical analysis and design method for related cables, members and joints are not formed yet. As a result, numerical simulation study of the cable-support joints has much academic and application value. In this paper, experimental study is conducted on cable force change, cable’s relative slippage and elongation for structures with continuous cable-strut joint and structures with intermittent continuous cable-strut joint under different initial pre-stresses and loads, and based on finite element software ANSYS10.0, multiple-dimensioned finite element models are established for the two different joints to conduct nonlinear numerical analysis where friction and contact factors are taken into consideration, and parameters’ effect on cable forces, pre-stress loss and cable force loss factors are also investigated. The main research work and relative conclusions are as follows:(1)By conducting experimental study on structures with continuous cable-strut joint and structures with intermittent continuous cable-strut joint under different cable diameters, concentrated loads, symmetrical loads and unsymmetrical loads, relationship is obtained among pre-stress, cable force of the tension side, cable force of the fixed end, loss rate of the cable force, elongation amount, and cable’s relative elongation amount. Comparative analysis is made between the two types of joints under concentrated loads, symmetric loads and asymmetric loads, by which the law of cable force change and difference changing with loads is gained.(2)Based on finite element program ANSYS, multiple-dimensioned finite element models are established for continuous cable-strut joint and intermittent continuous cable-strut joint to conduct nonlinear analysis(where friction and conduct factors are taken into consideration) on the deformation of cables and joints under pre-stresses. Some key numerical simulation methods of the two types of joints are brought up, such as definition of the material property, FE modeling, element generation and post process. By comparing the cable forces, cable force loss, relative slippage between numerical simulation conclusions and experiment, design tips for cable-strut joints are also given.(3)Based on the numerical simulation technique developed in this paper, simplified structures with cable-strut joints are established to investigate the effect of parameters, such as different pre-stresses, fiction coefficients, cable diameters and angles between beam and cable, on cable force changes and pre-stress loss, and design tips for cable-strut joints are provided in this paper based on the analyzing conclusions.
