Automatic manual transmission(AMT) has not noly high transimission efficiency and low fuel consumption but also simple structure, low technical threshold and cost compared with other automatic transimissions. However, AMT has the inherent defect of power interruption during shift process and the cluth is easy to be worn out for frequent starting and shift, which restricts the development and industrialization of AMT. Since the above problems, many researches have focused on enhancing the performance of existing AMT systems and on developing new technologies. This paper studies the structure and analyzes the performance of a novel automatic manual transmission(N-AMT) characterized by a planetary gear train installed on the AMT. The main works in this paper are as follows:① The structural characteristics and operating principle of the novel automatic manual transmission with planetary gear train are analyzed. And the rotate speed and torque characteristics of planetary gear train are analyzed by lever analogy method. The various operating modes of eight-gear N-AMT are summarized to provide the basis of the mode switching.② The parameters of six-gear N-AMT and ten-gear N-AMT are designed. The dynamics of N-AMT and AMT is analyzed based on ignoring the inertia of planetary gear train. The dynamic and economic simulations of N-AMT for six gears, eight gears and ten gears and AMT are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink and MATLAB/Stateflow software to verify the parameter of eight-gear N-AMT.③ The starting and shift process of eight-gear N-AMT is analyzed and the mode switching is studied and classified. The dynamics of eight-gear N-AMT is analyzed including the inertia of planetary gear train based on various mode switching. The fuzzy control of clutch/brake and engine is proposed.④ The dynamic and economic simulations, slipping friction work for clutch/brake and synchronizer performance of eight-gear N-AMT are analyzed based on MATLAB/Simulink software to verify its vehicle performace compared with AMT simulation results and bench test results for eight-gear N-AMT.
